In a press briefing, founder and chairman of Asia Inc. Forum Dato Timothy Ong said the Philippines is in a very good position to improve its economic standing in the region on account of its human capital, strong businesses and economic optimism.

He said the Philippines has a huge potential to become the next Asian Tiger. This, however, will take a great deal of work before it comes to fruition.

“In this country, you now have new leadership who has promised a new Philippines free of corruption, which resulted in degree of optimism on prospects of the Philippines,” Ong said.

Ong said the country needs to repackage itself to regain its old luster.

According to Ong, 13 economies in the world today grew by an average of 7% over 25 years. Among these, nine are from Asia, including four from the Asean: Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, and Indonesia.

by 2015, the Asean is integrating its economies, which is crucial to accelerating growth, social progress and economic stability and in promoting active collaboration and mutual assistance in the economic, social, cultural, technical and administrative spheres.

“We have to start learning that the way to move forward is to put the region above our national interest,” Ong said.
